Sanborn Technologies Centrifuge Applications

Liquid/Solid and Liquid/Liquid/Solid Separations

Two Phase “Liquid/Solid” Clarification within Sanborn Technologies centrifuges are achieved by exerting centrifugal gravitational force known as “g”-forces on the water or oil-based fluid.  Solid Particulate matter having a specific gravity greater than the water or oil-based fluid separate from the fluid and captured within the bowl for the centrifuge as the fluid flows over the rotor dam in a basket centrifuge or the inclined surface of a decanter beach. This process accelerates the settling or clarification process by the gravities exerted by “g”-force of the centrifuge.

Sanborn Liquid/Solid Centrifuges provide enhanced separation efficiencies by exerting high “g”-forces for fluid clarification and separation of particles from the fluid without the use of expendable media.

Separation Efficiency - Separation efficiency of Liquid/Solid Centrifuges is affected by six process related factors that can vary from given application to application. These process factors are as follows:

  1. Particle Size – the larger the particle size, the higher the particle separation efficiency
  2. Particle Shape – spherical particles will have a higher separation efficiency than flat or flakey particles.
  3. Specific Gravity of the Particle – particles with a higher specific gravity, will have a higher separation efficiency
  4. Fluid Viscosity – a fluid with a lower viscosity will have a higher the separation efficiency
  5. Temperature of the Fluid - a higher operating temperature of the fluid will lower the fluid viscosity achieving a higher separation efficiency. Some oil-based fluids may need to be heated to increase the desired separation efficiency.
  6. Residence time at “g”-force - the lower the flow rate, the longer the particle is subjected to the g-forces with the centrifuge rotor achieving a higher separation efficiency. This is the one operating parameter that can be adjusted to by either increasing or decreasing the flow rate to the centrifuge to either maximize separation efficiency or increasing the flow rate thereby reducing the separation efficiency of the centrifuge.

Sanborn Technologies offers the widest range of Centrifugal Separation Products for these applications without the use of filtration media.

Manually Cleaned Centrifuges

Used for the low flow applications or for process applications with relatively low solids loading. Manually cleaned centrifuges capture the solids in a bowl liner for ease of disposal offering a more cost-effective alternative to disposable media filtration. They also eliminate the need for filtration media and the costs associated with media purchases media stocking requirements, maintenance and disposal.

Automated Self-Cleaning Centrifuges

Used for medium to high flow rate applications or for separations with medium to high solids loading. The automated self-cleaning centrifuges are the best available solution for automated liquid /solid clarification. The solids that are automatically discharged from the machines are dewatered int a solid mass to reduce the cost of further processing and in many cases pass the TCLP test for transportation to a solids processing facility.

Continuous Solids Discharging Centrifuges

Used for high flow rate applications combined with high solids loading offer effective Liquid/Solid separation efficiency with a continuous “dry” solids discharge.
